His curiosity guided him to experiment with the substance on human skin, analysis what was in it and do clinical trials. He confirmed that the substance yielded a scarless healing of wounds, cuts, scrapes and restored the skin’s health after bruising caused by cancer radiation treatments. He also discovered that the substance healed the skin even of chemical burns. The antibacterial agent of the snail’s serum is a glycoprotein whose molecular weight (MW) is approximately 160,000. Comp Biochem Physiol C. 1985; 82(2):345-8. It kills both gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), but only in their growing states. Investigations of the shape of bacteria affected by the glycoprotein in the secretions have shown that it elongates the bodies of Escherichia coli by 3 to seven times, breaking the surface of Staphylococcus aureus and causing the cytoplamic walls to collapse.

In the snail's body tissues, GAGs are mainly found inside granules and in the shell. They are secreted onto the surface as a viscose liquid material. Snail glycosaminoglycan firmly binds divalent copper cations (Cu 2+) and forms copper peptides, with skin rejuvenation abilities. The proportion of copper in the snail mucins is impressive, but copper peptides have also been proven to be active in nanomolar amounts.

Avoidance and Remedy of Symptoms of Rosacea.

The application of the product to an area affected by rosacea has surprisingly enhanced and alleviated the symptoms of rosacea. Topical application has also helped to avoid episodes of rosacea symptoms in people that use it regularly on their face.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder described by 4 distinct clinical phases predominantly involving the central aspect of the face. The first evidence of rosacea is a frequent and intense vasodilation or flushing. In most patients this condition advances to a vascular phase described by redness of the skin due to the congestion of the capillaries (erythema). Once triggered, it can persist for hours or days. Many people remain stable in this phase while some progress to an inflammatory phase characterized by a symmetrical array of papules and pustules in addition to the persistent erythema. This phase can often become a chronic condition. Some people, mainly males, can progress to the final phase characterized by swelling or a characteristic hyperplasia (abnormal rise in the quantity of cells), especially of the cells on the nose.

Rosacea skin care commonly includes topical or oral antibiotics such as metranidazole and compounds such as sulfacetamide, sulfur, and azeliec acid. Nevertheless, these and other treatments for rosacea are all accompanied by several secondary effects. They are expensive and/or involve long bothersome treatment. Control of Activity of Cathelicidin Peptides that may Trigger Symptoms of Rosacea.

Dr. Richard Gallo, chief of dermatology, University of California, San Diego, and colleagues have lately deduced that a natural substance that is part of the body's inherent defensive system appears to play a role in creating the papules (bumps) and pustules (pimples) of rosacea. (Study funded by the National Rosacea Society (NRS) to discover possible causes and other key aspects of the disorder during the 5º Annual Rosacea Research Workshop, 2004, held in association with the annual convention of the Society for Investigative Dermatology).

He realized that the body creates peptides to protect itself from viruses, fungi and bacteria. He hypothesizes that certain peptides known as cathelicidins may be stimulated too easily in rosacea patients. The level of the defensive cathelicidins was 200 percent to 300 percent higher in rosacea patients. While many kinds of bacteria may trigger the formation of cathelicidins, he stated that they appear to be specially sensitive to the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which has been linked with rosacea in some researches.

The researchers have also realized that while the peptide is inactive when it initially appears on the skin’s surface, enzymes in sweat cause it to become active. They concluded that cathelicidins may stimulate the synthesis of bumps and pimples in rosacea. This may possibly be in connection with H. pylori and other bacterial stimulators.

Interestingly enough the GAGs found in the snail’s secretion play a part in regulating the function and expression of those endogenous peptides and act as important defensive molecules against quickly multiplying bacteria. This may explain so many testimonials from clients stating that they have erased or controlled the redness caused by rosacea or eczema by using the balm.

Control of Blood Vessel Growth in Rosacea.

According to Dr. Thiboutot, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a controller of blood vessel growth that may be associated to solar exposure, is highly present in the sebaceous glands of patients with rosacea (5º Annual Rosacea Research Workshop, 2004). She noted that previous investigation had found that VEGF may be involved in the creation of visible blood vessels in rosacea, and that rosacea patients may therefore be especially delicate to sunlight exposure.

In a further study, researchers found that neuropeptides -- substances created by neurones or other cells in the skin -- and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (found in sunlight) appear to induce the production of VEGF. Dr. Richard Granstein, chairman of dermatology at Cornell University, reported that small quantities of UVB, a type of ray that causes sunburn, appears to increase the production of VEGF in endothelial cells -- that is, cells that line blood vessels.

In addition, UVB caused an elevation in interleukin 8, which plays a part in inflammation. The peptide somatostatin, however, had an inhibiting effect on interleukin and on VEGF synthesis in certain skin cells known as keratinocytes. The relation to rosacea is still being explored.

A study done in 2003 showed that in the culture of human vascular endothelial cells, snail GAGs at 10 and 100 micro g ml(-1) inhibited VEGF-induced capillary tube formation. These discoveries suggest that the inhibitory effect of the snail GAGs on the creation of new capillary systems from pre-existing blood vessels is because of the restriction of exaggerated VEGF-induced vascular tube creation without altering its production. This may explain reports of some rosacea sufferers that have found comfort by using the balm twice a day on affected areas and others who have applied it to avoid further rosacea outbreaks.

Heals Dermatitis Caused by Exposure to Ionizing Radiotherapy for Cancer – Radiodermatitis An extensive investigation conducted in Spain, in 2000 and 2001, studied the effects of snail mucins in topical therapy of radiodermatitis, and demonstrated the existence of antioxidants and the functionality of the fibroblast growth factor in the snail secretion and its wonderful results to avoid and treat radiodermatitis when applied to patients undergoing ionizing radiation therapy for the control of malignant cells.

Results showed the existence of antioxidant activities in the snail's fluid: enzymatic as in superoxide dismutase (SOD), conjugation enzymes like glutathione-S-transferase and low molecular weight antioxidants. The antioxidant properties of the fluid can restrict or weaken the proliferation of free radicals which can end the domino effect of spreading cellular reactions.

The observation also showed, with no doubt, the presence of Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGB) in properties with a cell protection effect. The secretion boosts cellular activity and the natural regenerative mechanisms of the skin matrix, making skin healthier and stronger. At the same time, the degradation of flawed proteins caused by the enzymes in the secretion gives an additional support to the antioxidants by protecting the skin from inflammatory factors.
